Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise at the age of a little girl. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and raised. DuVernay's dad recalled the Civil Rights marches that occurred over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. DuVernay would use the summers she spent in Alabama as inspiration for her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied at the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English as well as African American study. DuVernay was a college student at the time she began to become interested in production for the broadcast media. DuVernay began her career as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being asked examine the garbage at the home of a member of jury. The duties she was required to complete left her unhappy and so, after deciding not to continue in the field of journalism, she was able to move into the industry of publicity. DuVernay was immediately hired from college to be an assistant publicist in an unassuming studio. She was hired in 1999 and established her own firm that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency.
